Do I qualify for hospice?

It is up to your medical doctor to diagnose you as terminally ill; this means a life expectancy of six months or less, to move forward and place you in hospice or palliative care. Once you are a part of hospice care system it is up to that specific doctor to make arrangements at any medical facility, hospital or the like, if you are in need of inpatient care. The cost of the medical service(s) provided during any such visits is paid for through your hospice benefit and to the hospice provider, which they coordinate – so there’s no added stress.

We recommend making sure to contact your Gold Canyon hospice care doctor, nurse or nurse practitioner to these arrangements because the last thing you and your support team need to think about is acquiring more medical costs. It should be about helping you be the happiest you, not how much money you are spending to do so.

You can continue to receive hospice care even if the disease runs its course and you live longer than the duration of what the hospice care provider had assumed. Of course we see this as a blessing and families are always so thankful for the care plans we create that allow them to spend even more time with the people they love, and this doesn’t mean your care will end. A hospice provider will reevaluate your specific diagnosis and see approve you for another six months of hospice or palliative care if it’s assumed your life expectancy is again within a six month range.

  • Will this doctor and your other medical doctors work together well and
    communicate what needs to be?
  • Will you get specific staff dedicated to my needs?
  • Will the hospice staff meet regularly with you and your family to discuss
the plan of care that you prefer?
  • Is the hospice provider certified and licensed to provide you with the best
    care?
  • Does this specific hospice provider train and provide caregivers (nurses,
therapists, counselors and volunteers) to care for you at your home?

Of course you may want to consider other questions specific to volunteers, including what training programs they go through, or ask about their emergency procedures and how quick of a response you’ll receive if you have an after-hours emergency.
