What It Means to be a Catholic Hospice Care Provider
Embracing Faith,Compassion and Values in End-of-Life Care
Americare Hospice and Palliative Care is the first hospice in the diocese of Phoenix, Arizona, to be approved as a Catholic Hospice. Though we identify as a Catholic hospice, we serve patients of all faiths. Our goal is to provide the highest quality of Phoenix hospice care that we can, regardless of a person’s religious belief.
Yet many people still have questions about what it means to have a Phoenix Catholic hospice care provider and how those religious ideals may influence the type of care offered or the environment in which care is given. Here’s what you need to know about what it means to us to be a Catholic hospice care provider:
Compassionate Care
Above all, being a PHX Catholic hospice care provider means providing compassionate care to both the patient and to the patient’s loved ones. We provide an environment that is loving and supportive, treating all people as God’s children. We treat our patients as if they were our own parents, our own brothers, our own daughters.
It is not just our goal to provide physical relief and comfort. We provide care for the whole person, including their mental and spiritual needs. We offer the same counseling to our patients’ loved ones, as well as counseling to help them with their financial needs. We show everyone the same care we would hope to get ourselves or that we would hope our own loved ones would get.
Access to Everyone
You do not have to be Catholic to be served by a Catholic hospice care provider near Phoenix. Americare Hospice and Palliative Care provides care to everyone, regardless of religious or spiritual faith – or lack thereof. We don’t turn away people because of their race or ethnicity, their gender, disability, or any other factor. That includes economic ability or insurability. We work to find a way to help those who are unable to pay.
Our openness to care for everyone in need of hospice services extends to those at the end of their lives as well as those needing a continuum of care.
Life-Sustaining Care
The Catholic Church does not believe in euthanasia or in taking away life-sustaining care to allow a life to end. We strive to create a balance between providing life-sustaining care and avoiding prolonging suffering. We provide medically assisted food and water, which we do not equate with medical care but with basic nourishment, and we continue to do so unless the food and water cannot be assimilated or unless the burden of providing this nourishment outweighs the benefit of it. We provide such nourishment even to those who are unconscious or who are in a permanent vegetative state.
Special Attention to Spiritual Needs
The end of a person’s life causes a lot of questioning about the purpose of one’s life and what comes next, even among those who have faith. We provide counselors to help our patients and their families grapple with the spiritual questions that are troubling them and to help them obtain some measure of peace. We also offer grief counselors to help families come to terms with the impending loss of their loved ones, as well as the actual loss when the time comes.
Overall Excellence
We are committed to providing the very best care that we can to all our patients, as well as providing the very best service to all of their families. We are committed to clinical and organizational excellence, ensuring that every aspect of our services meets the highest standards. We hire only the most qualified care providers for our team, and we demand the best from them. We apply the same standards to the volunteers we hire.
